It looks like this is the weekend that my wife and I become true Albertans. For it is this weekend that we decided we will change the insurance on our car to Alberta. My wife is from Saskatchewan and only came to Alberta for school (and unbenounced to her, meet me). This meant that she could keep her vehicle insured in Saskatchewan for the remainder of her school term which would expire sometime this year.
We decided to start checking out insurance in Alberta and found out that we needed to get an inspection before Alberta will allow those pretty red/white plates(which look great in photos, according to cops) to model themselves on our lovely car. Little did we know that the cost to accessorize would be so high. Currently, the vehicle which passes for insurance in Saskatchewan, is going to cost us in excess of $2,500 just to be worthy for Alberta roads.
Apparently Alberta only allows very highly maintained vehicles on their roads. If only they would take all this money they make in vehicle repair and put it to use in road maintenance so that we don't damage these 'luxury' vehicles we're expected to drive. Have you seen some of the pot holes around the city? How about driving down the highway without being launched into the air once or twice because the roadway is a little uneven?
I guess that this is just the price for living in Alberta.

I remember when I tried to bring my van over from BC to Alberta. We had just had a mechanic look over the whole thing before bringing it to a dealer for out-of-province inspection and it still cost me to make it Alberta road worthy. Maybe they have much more strick codes to measure by.
Great points hotrodent! And people say that Saskatchewan roads are bad! To think the Alberta government had a surplus, looks like it wasn't just social services that were cut by Klein....
The irony is that our tax credit will be paying for these services....I tell ya. Good thing we took the car into the garage cause who knows if I would have hit a pothole or two my brake line may have completely burst instead of just oozing fluid. Thank the Lord for that one!!
Well the car dealership said that they are legally bound to the law. Let's just hope that they are being honest in their assessment of other people because in actuality the "law" can create a mighty big loop hole to screw people over. Hey tell me what % of people do you think are honest? I heard a statistic one time that said people lie on average at least 7 times a day without even being conscious of it.
Not too sure of the statistics. But then, who's to say that the person who tells us the statistics aren't lieing as well?
It makes you wonder when you see some of the pieces out on the highways. Hail the blue clouds!
Have you been to 73 ave? Haha, worst road in the world! Lovely neighborhood, but terrrrible road. Sorry to hear that, Rod.
That area of Edmonton is TERRIBLE! It's been that way for a long time.
I agree that 73rd ave is pretty bad. At least they are working on it. I always found it funny that in my home town...the worst roads were the ones in front of the most expensive houses. Guess they know where their high taxes are NOT going.
Are you from Northern BC? I think I know you!
Time to update your blog!
